Pics of Porthleven Harbour 11.30 am until we run out!
Delicious fish barbecue as you’ve never tasted it before!

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR FLEET!

Today we have some dozen small licensed fishing boats in  the harbour, using static nets, lobster pots and hand lines which cause no damage to the sea bed or environment.  All fish caught is sold locally to gain maximum benefit to our local economy.

It’s hard to believe that there were 35 mackerel drifters, 57 pilchard drifters, 36 crabbers and 3 seines back in 1895, and an unbelievable 600 men and boys employed here. Originally Porthleven was a large cove and the catch in large seine nets mostly pilchards and mackerel.

The pilchards were exported to Italy and it was the Italians who built 3 large curing factories here, giving employment to many women. At first discussions of a potential harbour centred on breaking the bar at Loe Pool to provide a safe haven, but eventually building began in 1811 and the present harbour was completed by 1825. After this, the port and village developed rapidly with fishing changing dramatically too, to drift netting, crabbing, long-lining and hand-lining.

There have been many ebbs and flows in the fortunes of the harbour and fishermen here over the years, and once again our local fishermen are very much in need of your support.

Eat and enjoy, alongside all the wonderful entertainment on the Lime Kiln Stage.
Stay here all day and come back for more, with liquid refreshment from our Lime Kiln tent.
